Carshalton Titans

*Titans progress to the quarter finals!*

Brighton Seahawks 19-27 Carshalton Titans

Strong defence was the key to Carshalton enjoying an 8 goal victory over opposition from the league above.

Fresh from his trip back home last week, coach Andersen was faced with some late selection issues, with late issues with Grant and Tyler as well as Remy-who’s East African exploits paved the way for Oliver’s selection.

Solid from the word go, we were powerful and compact in defence. There was no disguise in Brighton’s gameplan as their main tactic was to shoehorn the ball to the line player at any opportunity. Unluckily for Brighton, Maxwell was up to the task, limiting the goals from their pivot to only 1 in the first half.

At the other end of the court, we were swift in attack, moving the ball quickly in the back court, chipping away the opposition with a calm assurance from all areas, exemplified by the fact all of our starting attackers found themselves on the score sheet in the first period.

We held the upper hand deep into the half and took an 11-6 lead going into the break.

Conceding only 6 goals in the first half, it was clear that if there was any improvement to be made, it would have been in attack. Thomas was very straightforward in the team talk about how we should be better at putting our chances away, and where we could better utilise the space in the court in the second period. This took effect instantly, and our shot conversion shot up. There was a clear synergy between our fullbacks and wings, both Rob and Adam were drawing defenders, giving Regis and Oliver ample space to do what they do best. Our lead went from 5 to a peak of 9 midway through the second half.

However, as their defence tired, so did ours. Gaps started to emerge, and despite Jack and Tariq’s efficient efforts in the goal, Brighton’s scoring rate rose in line with ours. Chris and Max had done the hard bit in defence. This was now down to Liam’s game management in the centre of the court. He controlled the tempo as we saw the game to a close. In the closing moments, Derry set up shop on the line instead of his usual home on the wing and was faultless, scoring at 100%

In performance was full of positives, we will also have to tighten some screws in training if we are to progress into the semi finals.
